Say No To Snake Eyes
WARNING!
This post contains graphic images of problem tongue piercings that you may find distressing if you are squemish...if you would like to read the information without the photos please email alfreton@pierceofart.co.uk and we can send you an image free version!
We can confidently say we are asked on a weekly basis 'can you pierce snake eyes?' the response from any of us will always be no, sorry! The same goes for horizontal tongue/'scoop' piercings.
We understand it looks cool, we completely agree, but the risks are too high for it to be a safe, viable piercing. And we aren't going to take that risk with your body and your safety. Our customers are our priority and we would never knowingly put them at risk. So that means snake eyes are a firm no.
But why?! I hear you exclaim...here's why.
Your tongue is an incredible piece of machinery...it means you can eat, drink and talk! Without it those things would be a lot more difficult. It can do all those things because it is a complex map of muscles, all doing different jobs. A horizontal tongue piercing in any placement will 'pin' two or more of those muscles together, making all those jobs much harder, or impossible.
And think of your teeth and gums! You only get one set of teeth, and once your gum erodes it never grows back. Now, all oral piercings carry risks to your teeth and gums, but the snake eyes piercing will 100% cause gum erosion and will damage the back of your teeth...try something for me? Say the word 'teeth' out loud and pay attention to how many times your tongue hits the back of your teeth. A lot, right?
A piece of jewellery in the end of your tongue is going to hit your teeth every single time you speak, it's only a matter of time before it will crack, chip or damage your teeth.
Someone said I could wear plastic to stop it damaging my teeth and gums!
There's a number of reasons we still wont perform this piercing, even with plastic. The main one being that plastic is not designed to be in your body for an extended period of time, and often acrylic jewellery is not body safe for even a moment, besides the issue with muscle pinning mentioned earlier. And plastic will still erode gums, your gums can be erroded by anything that is harder than them, even plastic is harder than your gums.
Someone else said that having smaller balls on the bar means it's better for healing
Yeah...no, that just wont work. Your tongue is one of the most vascular areas able to be pierced, this means there is a large blood flow to the area, which does mean oral piercings heal quite quickly, but it does mean that is swells quite dramatically. Meaning that smaller balls are just going to embed or get eaten up by your tongue, that's not going to be comfortable at all, and not easy to remove again. And any ball no matter the size will cause damage to your teeth and gums!
But what about normal tongue piercings?
Normal tongue piercings carry their own set of risks to your teeth and gums, as do all oral piercings, but a considerably smaller risk, that can be avoided or at least reduced massively by being careful, and downsizing your jewellery when it is too long. Those kinds of risks just can't be avoided with horizontal tongue piercings. Speaking of normal tongue piercings though...two vertical tongue piercings side by side (sometimes known as 'venoms') are much safer, and create a similar look to horizontal tongue piercings...and are very unique!
Okay, I'm almost convinced...but what if I still want to have it done?
Alright then, if the above hasn't shown you why this isn't a good idea, I should tell you, these piercings don't last long...at all. Personally, I've seen one 'tear' out within 90 minutes of it being done! They migrate and move, and generally don't stick around very long. So not only will they hurt your muscles, your teeth and your gums...they'll hurt your wallet too.
Alright, you've convinced me...but my friend has hers done and she's fine!
That's great, I'm really pleased for your friend...but you'll always find someone who's managed to heal something that's not a good idea, it doesn't mean you will. The likelyhood remains that you wont heal it just fine. And it only takes a day for these things to change! More people have problems than don't, so it's really not worth taking that chance is it?
We promise that we aren't refusing piercings because we just don't want to do them, and we aren't refusing just yours...these aren't safe, they aren't a good idea, and we will not put you at risk for the sake of a piercing and making a few pounds. Your wellbeing is more important to us, and to any reputable piercer. Be very wary of a piercer who will agree to this for you, why haven't they researched the risks? And if they have, why are they still prepared to perform this piercing?
